Co-Curricular Activities

In order to benefit from the full comprehensive secondary school experience, students participate in Leland and Gray’s co-curricular program. Activities take place before and after school, weekends, and summer break. These include athletics, academic support, theatre, music, and a wide variety of enrichment activities. Many Leland and Gray faculty, staff, and community members teach their expertise in the arts, health, career education, and other areas that foster successful, safe passage into college and careers.

Cheered by loyal community fans, the Leland and Gray “Rebels” participate in statewide athletic competitions. We offer girls’ and boys’ soccer and basketball at the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity levels. In spring, students can join middle school, junior varsity, and varsity baseball and softball teams. Tennis and golf are available in season, depending upon student interest. Our athletic programs teach not only skills and strategy, but also goal-setting, commitment, self-discipline, fitness, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and passion.

Leland and Gray Players

The Leland and Gray Players is an award winning Theatre program for students grades 7-12.

Productions include a fall musical, a straight play and a cabaret called "Hat's Off". Students are encouraged to be involved in any way they desire such as an actor, stage manager, backstage crew, costumer, set designer, props maker, set builder, musician, lighting and sound designer as well as an assistant director. Past productions include Footloose, Fahrenheit 451, Little Shop of Horrors, Romeo and Juliet, The Wizard of Oz, Spam-A-Lot, Dracula, Mary Poppins and Almost, Maine. Every summer, the Leland and Gray Performing Arts Exploration Camp (SPAE) attracts students of all ages from around Windham County who wish to learn the skills and experience the joy of theater. All performances are in the Dutton Gymnasium which transforms to a theatre multiple times a year.

Musicians can always be found in Leland and Gray’s band room, practicing numbers for the samba band, concert, and jazz bands, taking individual lessons with our music faculty, or jamming with each other during free time. Our middle and high school choruses and popular co-curricular a cappella group feature a challenging and eclectic range of music, and attract an enthusiastic group of students. Seasonal concerts at Leland and Gray and opportunities to participate in statewide events and competitions motivate our musicians to excel.

Our Help Empower Youth (HEY!) program offers numerous after-school activities based on students’ interests and academic needs. Photography, mountain biking, skateboarding, Frisbee, Dungeons and Dragons, and cooking are just a few of the many options offered throughout the school year. Daily students drop in to Homework Help to receive tutoring and enjoy a quiet study space. Both Leland and Gray staff and community members serve as mentors to participating HEY! students, helping them to connect hobbies and fun to perseverance and accomplishment.
