“The Man Trip” Expands!

sperling man trip 2015After seven years, the eighth grade boys wilderness rite of passage, affectionately known as “The Man Trip”, sponsored by the Twenty First Century grant, has expanded to include a Fall outing.

In October, thirteen boys entered the woods of Windham with Mr. Sperling and several professional wilderness mentors. Traditionally, the focus of the event has largely been on awareness skills and fire making, and there were elements of both of these woven in.  This time, however, with rain in the forecast, shelter-making became the priority.  The photograph is the fifty foot lean-to that was constructed by the group.  There was a sense of accomplishment as it was finished right before the rain and it kept everyone fairly dry and warm all night. Looking ahead, the Spring outing promises to be a great one.
