LG Players summer 2015TOWNSHEND     Leland and Gray (L&G) Players’ Summer Performing Arts Exploration 2015 (SPAE) will present a culminating performance Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8 in L&G’s Dutton Gymnasium where the program began July 27th

SPAE is in its eighth summer offering workshops in music, design, dance, lighting, sound, and drumming.   The program is directed and managed by Karlie Kauffeld, L&G ’09; Abby Wicker, L&G ’02, and Emily Fuller, L&G ‘08. SPAE’s staff includes alumni Rachael Turner, Jesse Cannella and Madison Cannella and L&G students Nathaniel VanOsdol, Grant Cullen, Susie Francy, Sam Thibault, Adam Culver, Fairen Stark and John Butler.  Workshop leaders include camp staff as well as L&G music director, Ron Kelley; percussionist and producerTodd Roach ; Choreographer Sarah Grasso; and Max Cramp ’16.

The SPAE 2015 production is The Lorax  adapted from Dr.Seuss' book and Universal's movie story by Kauffeld and Fuller.  The story is this: Teddy and Audrey are sisters determined to find out what happened to the "real" trees after discovering a scroll on the ground while walking one day in Thneedville. O'Hare who sells purified air is out to stop them. Teddy and Audrey meet the Once-ler who tells them the story of his past when he discovered the Truffula trees and used them to make Thneeds.  Discovering that "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not."

The performance incorporates skills in voice, design, lighting, music, sound, movement and production that have been introduced in the program.  Kauffeld notes: "The culminating show is the tool to teach the children different skills-- acting, singing, dance, design, crew work.” “The show is the reward;" Wicker adds, “but the process of working on it offers the richest learning."
